Spanish-Speaking Volunteer Opportunity for Cooking Matters

Acabo de recibir este mensaje de un coordinador de Larimer County Food Bank. Está buscando voluntarios para proveer educación sobre nutrición en español. Aquí están las detalles.

My name is Whitney Helton, and I work at the Food Bank for Larimer County as the Nutrition Coordinator. I realize that your club is so that individuals can practice Spanish rather than a service club, but I’m hoping you will pass this volunteer opportunity along to your members.

We have a Cooking Matters event coming up where we provide nutrition education at a resource fair, and we are looking for volunteers who are able to provide this education in Spanish. While it’s presenting nutrition information, there is no specific nutrition background required.

What is Cooking Matters

Cooking Matters programs help teach parents and caregivers with limited food budgets to shop for and cook healthy meals through nutrition and cooking courses and/or grocery store tours.

November 16th Event

This event is a type of mock grocery store tour; rather than bring individuals to the store, we bring the store to them at a family resource fair. Individuals will sign up for a tour time at our welcome table. They will then go through the tour during their timeslot, stopping at the grains, produce, and dairy/protein table along the way to learn nutrition information and how to shop for these items on a budget. Once they’ve hit all stations, they will go to our survey table where they will take a short survey on tablet and get a goody bag, including a $10 gift card to a grocery store. We are offering this both in English and in Spanish.

The following positions are open:

  • Grains (Spanish)
  • Produce (Spanish)
  • Protein/Dairy (Spanish)
  • Welcome table (Spanish)
  • Survey table (Spanish)
  • Floater (Spanish)

We will have a training prior to the event, and you will receive an instructor book with information so you know what to teach. Additionally we will have props to help you teach your topic.

When: Saturday, November 16th from 8:15am-12pm
Where: The Northside Aztlan Center (112 E Willow Street, Fort Collins, CO 80524)

Please email me at if you are interested in helping and/or have any questions. If you are unavailable for this event but are interested in being contacted about future volunteer opportunities with Cooking Matters, let me know! We occasionally need translators for our 6-week courses!
